A woman’s breasts often change over time, losing their youthful shape and firmness. Also known as mastopexy, a breast lift raises and firms the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the new breast contour. Sometimes the areola becomes enlarged over time, and a breast lift will reduce this as well. A breast lift can rejuvenate your figure with a breast profile that is youthful and uplifted.
Breast lift surgery does not significantly change the size of your breasts or round out the upper part of your breast. If you want your breasts to look fuller or smaller, you might want to consider either breast augmentation or breast reduction surgery.
The surgery is accomplished under general anaesthetic. Surgery planning begins with an overall evaluation to ensure you are healthy enough. You should be honest about your medical history. This includes information about any medical conditions, drug allergies, smoking habits and medications that you currently take. It is important for you to provide complete information. You also have to undergo a mammogram or ultrasound examination and take baseline blood tests and in some cases an ECG.
Your breast lift surgery can be achieved through a variety of incision patterns and techniques. There are three common incision patterns: Around the areola alone, around the areola and vertically down from the areola to the breast crease or around the areola and vertically down from the breast crease and horizontally along the breast crease.
After your breasts are reshaped and excess skin is removed, the remaining skin is tightened as the incisions are closed. Some incision lines resulting from breast lift are concealed in the natural breast contours; however, others are visible on the breast surface. Incision lines are permanent, but in most cases will fade and significantly improve over time. Sutures are layered deep within the breast tissue to create and support the newly shaped breasts. Sutures, skin adhesives and/or surgical tape may be used to close the skin.
We will discuss the procedure in detail with you during your consultation. The consultation includes an explanation of the surgical procedure, risks and possible complications associated with the surgery, and what to expect after surgery such as possible post-operative side effects and pain management. The consultation also includes an evaluation of what would be the right breast implant size, shape, placement and incision site for you based on your personal goals for surgery, and a thorough and realistic review of your expectations. You will also be shown many pre and post-operative photographs of other patients previous breast lifts performed by our surgeons. We will answer all your questions. A consultation takes 1 hour.
Once you know that breast lift is right for you, you may schedule surgery several days or weeks from the time of your consultation to assure you have had enough time to understand and accept all aspects of the operation.
